JIB Sheet - January 2012

JIB Sheet

Todd Bickley, Your 2012 Commodore

I would like to congratulate Past Commodore Geoff Bailey on a successful 2011 year. Under his leadership and with the assistance of numerous Club members, the Board was able to accomplish a number of projects, which included the renovation of the North Shore Restrooms, the acquisition and installation of the pedestals, and the start of the infrastructure improvement project.

Those of you who may not know, Jim Widmer has resigned as the Club Secretary. Jim assures me that it was not because of the new Commodore! Jim served at his last Board meeting on December 19, 2011 and his Club knowledge and his ability to remember past actions will be missed. Jim has indicated, however, that he will continue to assist the Club as needed. Jim was Club Secretary for the past six years.

To fill the void left by Jim, Dave Bringman has agreed to serve as the Club Secretary for 2012. Dave has been a Club member for approximately six years and he has volunteered and provided materials on many Club projects.

As some of you may know, the Board in 2011 created the position of Facilities Manager, which will be a full-time position. This position was further reviewed and approved by the members at the December Membership meeting. The Board offered the position to PC Chuck Reichman, who is currently the Clubhouse Manager. PC Reichman has accepted the offer of Facilities Manager and will work with the Board to transition the current position of Clubhouse Manager to Facilities Manager. The position is for one year, starting January 1, 2012 and the Board will evaluate the position at the end of the year. The job description requires the Facility Manager to complete tasks currently handled by contracted services, oversee the bar operations, and be in charge of all full and part time help on the grounds with the exception of the pool staff. One of Chuck’s many responsibilities will be to coordinate social activities with the various social events chairpersons. Please contact Chuck at 614-989-7224 if you have questions or need assistance with your functions.

Thank you to those who offered support and encouragement at the Change of Watch. Please note that the Board will continue to work to complete a number of projects in 2012.

Finally, the Recognition Dinner is scheduled for January 14, 2012 and the Winter Brunch is scheduled for January 22, 2012. Please plan on attending.

Commodore,
Todd Bickley

From the Rear Commodore

My daughter Michelle is home from her first quarter at The Ohio State University. That reminded me of my first quarter at OSU and my freshman composition class. I enjoyed the class so much I decided to repeat my perfected writing technique. Think about the subject all week, wait until the very last min- ute, spend as few minutes as possible writing the composition, and then stay up the rest of the night typing it. These articles are going to be a Labor of Love. Actually, I composed some great articles while dreaming last week, unfortunately they disappeared from my memory when I woke up!

Speaking of memories- Christmas break and January weekends were the time of year back in the 60's and 70's when John Lay, Chuck Dracka, Jeff Bugby, Jim and Tim Kaufman, myself and others would spend hours playing ice hockey in the lagoon at PCYC. We had either hockey skates, figure skates, or boots and none of us had any protective hockey gear. We would play until it got dark, or we banged our heads or elbows on the ice, or skated into a dock, or got whacked too many times by hockey sticks and pucks, or lost all our pucks into the open water by the dock posts and shore, or fell through thin ice and had to get home before one's feet froze. At break time we would open bottles of ice cold coke that we had buried in the snow and eat chocolate chip cookies, that is if the pop did not freeze solid or we forgot to bring a bottle opener. This did not happen every year because we had a year or two of Global Warming back then too, mixed in with years of great ice skating. I am sure glad we had Global Warming back in the Ice Age or Lake Erie and the PCYC would not exist.

Projects- I reviewed last years January jib sheet. That sewer and parking lot project that we told you about, well it has started. Please excuse the mess as we continue to improve the club facilities. You will notice changes in the kid's room soon.

Boaters- Todd Warnike's riser crew introduced me to the great time they had pulling dock risers last November. I was sore for a week and I only observed. We really need to thank those guys for their efforts or even help out next time around. Also, prepare for winter storms. We already have had a bbq grill roll down the roadway due to high winds. Last year we had dock boxes blown into the lagoon on numerous occa- sions. In the past, we have had dock boxes float away during times of high water.

Committees- Please check the photographs and diagrams in the ballroom for the proper storage of your tables and chairs. For instance, on the round tables one set of legs is marked to close first ,then the second. Then store the tables table top to table top and metal frame to metal frame. The chairs are stacked eight high and there is a dolly available to move the stack of chairs. When we all work together our equipment will last longer.

I really hope I hit the right buttons and this gets to Tammy. These word processors are sure easier to use than that correction tape of my college days. This is easier than I expected so next month I will start before midnight and maybe even two days before deadline.

Rear Commodore,
Mike Hablitzel
